Hi Friends !
Welcome to our first ever blog post and we hope you’re well ! : )
Our blog, for now will act as a supplement to our posts just to add context and a little bit more information to what it is that we are delivering. We hope to keep these super short.
Today’s post is the start of our Foundations mini series: ‘Foundations’ sets out to discuss and provide an explanation for the core values of evoke being : Communication , Expression and Feeling .This series will be very stripped back and basic , but we feel as though this is necessary ,for there to be a strong foundation to build upon, as it tends to be in our human nature to overcomplicate things. We don’t promise to provide you a ground breaking , all inspiring new perspective to life but just to place a gentle emphasis on the things you already may know and to be reminded of the beauty and complexity of what can be deemed ‘common sense’ .
The question is WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
In true evoke fashion , here’s the Oxford dictionary definition ;
The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing or using some other medium.
Communication , as previously stated is the absolute basis of evoke , so we felt it’d be important to break down its meaning.
In the post the words ;
Impart , Exchange ,Interchange and Transmit are all circled.
Takeaway- communication is something we actively DO both consciously and subconsciously , even in your stillness and silence . You are constantly imparting , exchanging , interchanging and transmitting information (think about it) .
The evoke definition of communication ;
the imparting ,exchanging ,interchanging and transmission of information and feeling that can result in understanding.
So a question to ask yourself is what do YOU communicate and what do you HOPE to communicate , even in your silence ? Is there a gap between the two ?
Communication Process Model
Another breakdown of what communication is, is the 1948 Shannon- Weaver model (there are multiple models but this is the most well known and an evoke favourite)
1.The Sender - this is the party whom wants to communicate
2.The Message - the information the sender wishes to communicate.
3.Encoding - How the message is to be communicated.
4.Channel- How the message is to be sent.
5.The receiver -the person to whom the sender wishes to send the message to.
6.Decoding - How the receiver understands/interprets the message
7.Feedback-How the receiver responds to the message
8.Noise - anything that may interfere with the communication or reduce the chance of successful communication .
Step 8 -Noise - when communication goes wrong.
There are 4 types of noise
1.Psychological Noise - This noise comes from within us in the form of pre-conceptions , biases ,beliefs and assumptions
2. Physical noise -This is noise that distracts us -noise that is created by a third party
3.Environmental noise - noise in the surrounding area where the message is being received.
4.Semantic Noise - Noise that is created by the sender, e.x complicated language/lack of clarity .
Evoke does not aim to push a specific agenda or narrative, we just want you to think about what, why when where and how you communicate , so with this we say ,do what you wish ,but as a minimum think of a time where communication broke down , what type of noise was interfering with the message being communicated effectively?
Do you even agree with this model ?
